Privacy Policy

This Privacy Policy explains how ITSpeedTest.net ("ITSpeedTest.net", "we", "us", "our") collects, uses, and protects information when you use our website and the internet speed test it provides. We are committed to handling your data transparently and keeping the personal information we process to the minimum needed to run our service.

By using ITSpeedTest.net, you agree to the practices described in this policy. It applies to all visitors of the website and to all of our tests — the download, upload, and latency (ping) tests — as well as the aggregate statistics we publish. We also encourage you to read our Cookie Policy, which explains the cookies we and our partners may set.

I. Information We Collect

Speed test measurements

The speed test itself runs in your browser and measures your connection against Cloudflare's global network of public test endpoints. We do not operate a backend that stores the raw data transferred during a test. When a measurement completes, we record an anonymous, aggregate result — your download and upload speed and a latency value — together with the approximate location and internet service provider associated with your connection. These results are combined with everyone else's to build the averages shown on our statistics page. They are never linked to your identity.

Approximate location and service provider

To group the statistics by provider, country, and city, we briefly use your IP address to look up:

  • Your approximate location (city, region, and country) using a locally hosted MaxMind GeoLite2 database. No data is sent to MaxMind to perform this lookup.
  • Your internet service provider's name using the third-party service ipwho.is. The result is cached on our server for a short period to avoid repeated lookups.

Your IP address is used only transiently for these lookups and to prevent duplicate submissions. We do not store your IP address alongside your test results, and the published statistics contain only aggregated averages and counts.

Analytics

We use Matomo, a privacy-focused, self-hosted web analytics platform, to understand how our site is used and to improve it. Matomo is configured to anonymize IP addresses so that individual visitors cannot be identified. The data stays on our own infrastructure and is not sold or shared for advertising.

Advertising

ITSpeedTest.net may display advertising to help cover the cost of running the service. Where ads are shown, third-party advertising partners may set cookies to deliver and measure ads. These advertising cookies are only set with your consent where the law requires it, and you can decline them. We do not control how these partners process data and encourage you to review their own privacy policies. See our Cookie Policy for details.

II. How We Use Information

We use the information we collect to:

  • Calculate and display the aggregate speed and latency statistics on our website.
  • Operate, maintain, secure, and improve the website and our tests.
  • Understand overall traffic and usage trends through anonymized analytics.
  • Where applicable and with consent, display and measure advertising.

We do not sell your personal information.

III. Sharing and Third Parties

We do not share personal data except as needed to provide the service or as required by law. The third parties involved in running ITSpeedTest.net are:

  • Cloudflare — provides the public endpoints your browser connects to during a test; your connection is subject to Cloudflare's own policies.
  • ipwho.is — receives your IP address to return your service provider's name.
  • MaxMind GeoLite2 — a local database used for approximate location; no data is transmitted to MaxMind.
  • Advertising partners — only where ads are shown and where you have consented to advertising cookies.

IV. Data Retention

Aggregate statistics are kept indefinitely because they contain no personal data. Transient lookups (location and provider) are not retained beyond the short cache needed to serve the test, and analytics data is retained only as long as necessary to understand usage trends.

V. Your Rights

Depending on where you live, you may have rights under laws such as the GDPR, including the right to access, correct, or delete your personal data, and to object to or restrict certain processing. Because our statistics are anonymous and aggregated, we usually cannot identify a specific individual within them. If you have a request or question about your data, please contact us using our contact form.

VI. Data Security

We apply reasonable technical and organizational measures to protect the limited information we process against unauthorized access, alteration, disclosure, or destruction. In the event of a data breach that affects users, we will act promptly to contain it and notify affected users where required by law.

VII. Children's Privacy

ITSpeedTest.net is a general-audience tool and is not directed at children. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children.

VIII. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we do, we will post the revised version on this page with a new effective date. Your continued use of the website after changes are posted constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.

IX. Contact Us

If you have any questions, requests, or concerns about this Privacy Policy or how we handle your data, please reach out through our contact form.
