A broadband speed test sends real traffic between your device and a nearby server, then times how quickly that data moves. The result is broken into a few key numbers, and each one tells you something different about how your connection will feel day to day.
Your download speed is how fast data travels from the internet to your device, measured in megabits per second (Mbps). It governs almost everything you consume online: streaming video, loading web pages, downloading files, and pulling in game updates. Your upload speed is the reverse direction — data moving from your device to the internet. It matters most for video calls, posting photos and videos, cloud backups, online gaming, and live streaming. Ping, also called latency, measures the round-trip time for a small packet to reach a server and come back, in milliseconds (ms). Lower is better. A high download number with high latency can still feel sluggish, especially for gaming and video calls, where responsiveness matters more than raw throughput. Run a focused ping test to dig deeper.
Jitter is the variation in your ping over time. Steady latency feels smooth; latency that bounces around causes choppy calls and rubber-banding in games. Low and consistent jitter is the sign of a healthy, stable connection.

If several people stream, game, and join video calls at once, add their needs together — that is the real demand on your line. A household running 4K on one TV while someone games and another backs up files can easily want 200 Mbps or more.
How you connect can change your results as much as your plan does. A wifi speed test measures the whole path, including the wireless link, so it often reads lower than a wired test on the same line.

This internet speed test runs directly in your browser and measures real data transfers against Cloudflare's global network — one of the largest and most widely distributed networks in the world, with servers in hundreds of cities. Because your traffic is served from a nearby edge location, the test reflects the true performance of your connection rather than the limits of a single distant server.
To gauge download speed and upload speed, we move blocks of data in each direction and measure how quickly they complete. For ping and jitter, we send a series of small requests and time their round trips. Advertised speeds are usually "up to" maximums measured under ideal conditions. Real-world results are affected by Wi-Fi, congestion at peak times, your hardware, background apps, and the distance to the test server. A wired test during off-peak hours gives the closest comparison to your plan.
Under 20 ms is excellent, 20–50 ms is good and fine for almost everything, and 50–100 ms is acceptable for general use. Above 100 ms you may notice lag in fast-paced games and video calls. Lower ping always feels more responsive.
It can. A VPN encrypts your traffic and routes it through a remote server, which adds latency and can reduce throughput — especially if that server is far away or busy. For the fastest result, run your mbps test with the VPN turned off, then compare with it on.
Speeds are measured in megabits per second (Mbps), while file sizes are in megabytes (MB). There are 8 bits in a byte, so to estimate download time, divide your Mbps by 8. A 100 Mbps connection downloads at roughly 12.5 MB/s.
